Mortal Kombat X Kano Trailer Pummels D'Vorah

Another veteran was confirmed for Mortal Kombat X's roster today. A new gameplay trailer from NetherRealm Studios shows Kano facing off against newcomer D'Vorah.

D'Vorah is a half-insect, half-human. Or an insect-like humanoid. Or whatever. Point is, she shoots bees at people and has stingers. Gross. She's one of several new characters in MKX's roster.

Kano's more than a match for her, though. He's come a long way from his dude-with-a-metal-plate-bolted-to-his-face design from the first Mortal Kombat. He has more extensive cybernetics, perhaps to offset his older age. Half of his face is now machine, and his heart is a mini-reactor that he probably stole from Iron Man.

Like other fighters in the game, Kano has three variations to choose from. Each gives him access to different abilities. Here's a brief description of each:

  • Cutthroat - This variation unlocks new knife-fighting combos (sorry, "kombos") for Kano. In addition to a nasty-looking knife, he also uses wristblades and sharp discs to dice up his opponent.
  • Cybernetic - Cybernetic Kano excels at long range attacks and defending against air attacks. He hammers his opponent from afar using grenades and a Cyclops-like laser eye.
  • Commando - This is the grappler variation, ideal for close-range combat. Kano is able to counter both low and high attacks from his opponent.

The gameplay trailer shows off one of Kano's grisly X-ray moves at the end. Kano grabs D'Vorah from behind and slashes his knife diagonally across her chest. The X-ray slow-mo shows the blade slicing her rib cage apart. She's understandably dazed by this, giving Kano the chance to grab her by the neck and snap her spine.

Kano's killing blows aren't always so elaborate, though. The parting image from the trailer is him blasting a hole in D'Vorah's skull with his laser.

I know that Kano's never been as popular as some of the other original characters like Sub-Zero or Raiden. Still, I've always had a soft spot for him thanks to his easy Fatality from the first game (Back-Back-A!). I'm glad they played up the cybernetic aspects of his character in Mortal Kombat X to make him as weird and off-putting as the rest of the cast, though. Looks like he's got some fun tricks up his sleeve, too.

Kano and the rest of the psychos will return in 2015. Mortal Kombat X is slated to launch on PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.
