It’s been a growing trend lately in the monthly NPD numbers showing that the Wii has not only lost its strong month-to-month sales appeal but it’s now in last place among the home console manufactures when it comes to moving hardware. Sony, on the other hand, has slowly started to climb the ladder to trail right behind the Xbox 360.
The September hardware results shows that the Wii only moved a shocking 240,000 units, according to the NPD numbers on Gaming Everything, which is actually lower than what the PS3 was doing early last year, which was bottoming out at about 270,000 a month. Instead, the PS3 is now picking up the pace and pumped out an impressive 364,000 units in the month of September.
Of course, the battle between the waning Wii and the percolating sales of the PS3 are nothing compared to what Microsoft’s console accomplished for the month of September. The Xbox 360 managed to move an impressive 438,000 units, aptly replacing unit sales where the Wii used to be just one year ago.
As for software sales, the complete list of the top 10 selling games for the month of September can be viewed below, with Madden, Gears of War, FIFA 12 and Dead Island all making the top five. Despite the impressive numbers that brought in more than $1.16 billion in hardware and software during the month of September, according to GameIndustry.biz there was actually a six-percent revenue decline from last year during the same period in North America. Ouch.
