Grinding Gears Games announced that a brand new free-to-play action-MMORPG is on the way that follows in the footsteps of classics like Baldur's Gate, Alien Shooter and Diablo. The game looks remarkably polished so far and features isometric hack-and-slash gameplay with HD visuals and plenty of blood and gore to boot.

Chris Wilson, Grinding Gear Games’ Founder commented in the press release, saying…
“We listened to the fan communities of several popular online action RPGs as we designed Path of Exile and are focused on replayability, depth and accessibility,” … “We’ve designed the game that we would want to play ourselves, and we know hardcore Diablo, Titan Quest and Dungeon Siege players will find the style familiar and addictive.”

It also seems to have a bit of that Baldur’s Gate and DarkEden visual aesthetic going on, which definitely makes it an attention-grabbing game. The hardcore appeal of Path of Exile could easily make this a sleeper hit of early 2011.
