After being fired by parent company Activision, Infinity Ward founders Vince Zampella and Jason West created a new studio called Respawn Entertainment. Rumors keep popping up that they're going to announce their first game at this or that gaming convention but EA Partners head David DeMartini insists this talk is premature.
"The thing everybody needs to remember is they were starting at absolute zero," DeMartini told Eurogamer. "This is two guys who really know what they're doing having to go find a place for the team, buy chairs and desks and furniture, find new technology from the ground up, and pull a team together. I need to get HR people and contracts. There are all kinds of things and administration that need to take place."
"Amongst all that administration they've pulled together the core of a fantastic team and they're starting to work on a whole bunch of ideas to try and find what is going to be the one right idea for us."
Considering nothing is decided about the game, there's a considerable amount of buzz about it. One reason is that Respawn has hired many Modern Warfare 2 team members away from Infinity Ward. Many gamers are presumably expecting something else of that caliber from Respawn.
The other reason people are interested in the game is the huge amount of drama swirling around Respawn's formation. West/Zampella filed a lawsuit against Activision for unpaid royalties and so have a number of other former IW employees. Activision has counter-sued West and Zampella, claiming that the two delayed development of Modern Warfare 3 and withheld bonuses from subordinates. To top it all off, Respawn's game is going to be distributed and published by Activision's rival EA.
