During a Saints Row 4 Comic Con panel, developer Deep Silver Volition revealed the first downloadable content details for Saints Row 4. The first post-launch add-on for the game will be called Enter the Dominatrix.
Enter the Dominatrix was originally the title of a Saints Row: The Third expansion pack announced in spring of last year. The expansion depicted an alien invasion of Steelport. To neutralize the Third Street Saints as a threat, the aliens trapped the gang inside a virtual-reality version of Steelport - the titular "Dominatrix." Because the Dominatrix is a virtual world, the Saints are able to bend the rules and perform superhuman feats.
If that premise sounds familar, it's because that idea was turned into Saints Row 4. Publisher THQ decided last year that the expansion would work better as a full-fledged sequel to SR3 instead.
"When I looked at the Enter The Dominatrix expansion in production at Volition, I was blown away by the ideas and desire to expand the fiction of the franchise," THQ president Jason Rubin said in June 2012. "I asked the team what it could achieve given more time, more resources, and a broader scope for the project. We all agreed we wanted to play that game."
THQ ultimately went bankrupt and was forced to sell the Saints Row series and Volition to Koch Media. Koch's Deep Silver label is now publishing the game. Apparently they liked the Dominatrix/Matrix wordplay and decided to greenlight DLC with the original SR3 expansion's name.
According to Game Informer's write-up of the Comic Con panel, the Saints Row 4 Dominatrix DLC will be presented as a behind-the-scenes documentary. The game's characters will explain why the content of the add-on was cut from the final game. It's not actually clear what that content will be, though. Maybe it's a bunch of "lost missions" that Volition scrapped from the development of the SR3 expansion pack?
Dominatrix wasn't the only content that Volition left out of SR4. Volition studio head Steve Jaros revealed that the game originally had a Bollywood-style dance number at the end as well. It doesn't sound like that musical act will be appearing as DLC, though.
Enter the Dominatrix will be released within 45 days of the game's August launch. Perhaps it'll be released as part of a Season Pass, much like SR3's downloadable content.
