What a headline, eh? Well, if the reviews didn’t really spark your interest with honesty, perhaps an editorial will set the records straight. And you know how that old saying goes: Sometimes the best way to get the information you want is when it’s not being presented as information you want.
Lawrence Sonntag from the TheGameReviews writes up an article about the unchanging times in the camp of the Star Ocean franchise. The lapse in innovation has left a bad taste in the mouth of reviewers, along with the absence of ingenuity in both art and gameplay.
Comparisons to the creativity of past games from the SNES/NES era are tossed around in the editorial, which truly highlights the problem for some of today’s games, especially Star Ocean IV. Wherein past games lacked maturity in the aesthetics department, Sonntag explains that developers still aimed for something truly ambitious, which is true. Final Fantasy VI, Rudra and Chrono Trigger come to mind. But with Star Ocean IV he points out how the game, with cumbersome execution, doles over a gameplay formula that acts a decade too old.
Perhaps the developers bit off more than they could chew? Or maybe Square was just milking a franchise because they could? Either way, you can check out TheGameReviews’ editorial to get the whole low-down on the situation. For more gaming news, info and updates, be sure to stay tuned in with Blend Games.
