Today Valve provided a slew of flashy stats about their digital distribution platform Steam. The service now has over 30 million active accounts.

Six million of those customers access Steam daily. The peak number for simultaneus users is three million. Some of the growth can be attributed to the release of the Mac version of Steam.

While all of these players are logged on, they're spending a whole lot of money, too. Sales are up 200% compared to the previous year. This is partly due to downloadable content, which Valve has steadily been adding to the service since early 2009. Another factor: several big releases, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Fallout: New Vegas, use Valve's publishing and development suite Steamworks. In most instances, games that use Steamworks require players to download Steam.
