THQ and Nickelodeon announced today that they've extended their licensing agreement for the SpongeBob SquarePants franchise. THQ will retain the worldwide publisher and developer for games based on the animated series.

THQ's first SpongeBob game was SpongeBob SquarePants: Operation Krabby Patty, released in 2001 for the PC. The new agreement applies to SpongeBob games created for the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, DS, PSP platforms. It also extends to downloadable games on Xbox Live, PSN, and the Wii's Virtual Console.

The first game to be created under this new agreement is being prepared for the 3DS, THQ's uDraw GameTablet for the Wii, and Xbox 360's Kinect. The unnamed project is expected in 2011.
