During an interview with Videogamer, studio head Tymon Smektala expressed that the team would absolutely love to step in and help development along. All Techland needs to do is ask.
Akin to how most would feel after working on an IP so long that it became part of them, Smektala noted that Dead Island is Techland's "child" in a way, so there's still a reason for them to have a connection to the IP.
“I personally would love to go back to Dead Island because I really love that game,” he said. “I think there is a place for both [Dead Island and Dying Light] to strive in the market. As long as someone would be able to find something that would make them different, that would draw a clear line, and I think that’s doable.”
Someone's going to need to step in to work some miracles, apparently, as developer Yager has been pulled from the project entirely, and as such it's going to be a while before we'll see Dead Island 2 on the market. It's been a bit of a sordid story, especially since Deep Silver originally denied rumors that Yager was working on the sequel to the zombie game back in 2012, but then made a major announcement at E3 2014 that the game in fact did exist and would be developed by Yager.
After rumors cropped up here and there about delays, Deep Silver went ahead and confirmed what many thought to be true: Yager would be pulled indefinitely from the project and would likely see a 2016 release instead of a 2015 debut. Unfortunately, there has yet to be a replacement studio announcement, so it appears the game could be floating around in the air right now for all intents and purposes.
It'd be a great idea for the brand to invite a new developer on board to implement some new and interesting ideas, especially after the underwhelming original game and pseudo-sequel. Dying Light was a much better game overall, so I'd like to see Dead Island make improvements in the same direction. Of course, it could be a long while until we see the zombie genre actually evolving since we're just now stuck on dune buggies and sorts in Dying Light's newest expansion.
We'll have more on the story as it continues to develop.
