Subscribe To Tekken 6: 43 Seconds Of Mediocrity Updates
Namco Bandai released a new trailer for Tekken 6 that features three different fights and six different characters. The good news is that the animations and framerate are superb, the bad news is that other than a breaking floor we don’t get to see much else of the game, or for that matter, anything strikingly interesting about the fights.

Damage-inducing moves that affect the environment has been all the rage since Street Fighter II from over a decade ago. Games like Dead or Alive, Marvel Vs Capcom and Mortal Kombat perfected this feature to an extent, and Tekken tried improving on it as the series went on. I’m not entirely sure though that Tekken 6 has “improved” on the feature all that much, though.

The problem is that the environments getting messed up look so gimmicky in this latest iteration of Namco’s fighter and the breaking floor – while revealing more areas to further the combat – doesn’t really do much for the presentation of the fighting itself. I suppose it has a lot to do with the pacing of Tekken’s overall fighting scheme, which settles with the breakable environments with far less symmetry than a game like Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe.

You don’t have to take my word for it. The 43 second gameplay montage speaks volumes of mediocrity. The problem is that it hardly shows the promise of a next-gen fighter the way UFC 2009 and Fight Night Round 4 have done with their flashy and interest-grabbing trailers.

Nevertheless, my only hope for this game, when it releases, is that the fighting and styles are balanced enough to provide intense back-and-forth fights, as opposed to the usually one-sided fights that the Tekken series is known for. Even if it doesn’t house evolutionary fighting features, if the fighting that is present is at least well-rounded then it could very well make up for what Tekken 6 lacks in innovation.
