Namco Bandai Games announced today that there will be a new entry in the long running Ridge Racer franchise following up on the Michael Bay-style destruction racer that didn't quite pan out for them the way they thought.
Ridge Racer Driftopia takes a completely different avenue to racing than the previous Ridge Racer Unbounded, which released last year for home consoles. The addition of destructible environments and dubstep didn't quite turn into instant success like some other racing games out there...come to think of it, I can't think of a racing game that dabbles in dubstep and destructibility and is still relevant.
Anyway, Olivier Comte, Senior Vice President, Namco Bandai Games commented about the newly announced title, saying...
“At NAMCO BANDAI Games we are committed to embracing new business models alongside the still vital traditional retail sector,”... “Free-to-play is playing an increasingly important role, so it’s very exciting to be bringing one of our most successful franchises to the free-to-play space for everyone to enjoy.”
Not much is known about the game but Namco Bandai makes it clear that they're getting back to the basics that made the game popular in the first place: drifting.
The only thing now that might have some gamers concerned is how well Namco will handle the microtransactions for the free-to-play rendition of Ridge Racer Driftopia?
More info will be revealed for the game soon or you can keep an eye on the official website to learn more.
