The Hunger Games – Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2 may be two movies that come together as one big chapter of the same story – but the reality is that the two sequels are going to be quite different from one another. As we saw last year in theaters, Mockingjay Part 1 was all about the politics of war, and the importance of creating propaganda that will get supporters to join your cause. From the looks of the Mockingjay – Part 2 trailer that was shown at San Diego Comic-Con today, however, the finale of the young adult franchise will be coming to close with a full-on battle movie that will be full of tremendous energy and excitement.

One of the first events to be held at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con in Hall H, The Hunger Games – Mockingjay Part 2 presentation was held early this afternoon – and in addition to featuring a panel that included Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Willow Shields, director Francis Lawrence, and producer Nina Jacobson, the film also debuted its first full-length trailer. And while the teaser that was released for the movie last month was pretty cool, this one is absolutely going to drop fans’ jaws.

Opening with a shot of a dam just outside the Capitol, the footage began with voice-over from Donald Sutherland’s President Snow – acknowledging that he’s been watching Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen, and watching her watch him. There are clips of Katniss walking into a snowy garden – featuring one white rose – and a plane flying into the Capitol, and it all sets up a very ominous tone. In voiceover, we then hear that for the first time ever the districts in Panem have been brought together, and are ready to fight the totalitarian government that has kept them down for years and years

The footage then revealed Katniss leading her march into the Capitol, followed by hundreds if not thousands of supporters as she makes her way down the same bleacher-lined passage she went down with Peeta during the first Hunger Games, and became known as The Girl on Fire. It’s at this point that we begin to see what kind of traps the Capitol has laid out in front of the resistance. For example, Katniss fires an arrow into a space between two buildings, and from hidden contraptions come huge bursts of flames. We also see Katniss and her crew running away from a wave of black liquid pouring between the buildings, and an entrance that has been outfitted with automatic firing machine guns. This is all juxtaposed against shots of what looks like a wedding, and Katniss dancing with Willow Shield’s Prim, but it only serves to make all of the action going down in the Capitol that much more intense.

The end of the trailer featured two key bits of dialogue, specifically from Josh Hutcherson’s Peeta Mellark, and Katniss. First, we hear Peeta discussing how many people President Snow has killed, and how Katniss killing him would mean that all of those deaths actually meant something. The big killer line at the end comes from our heroine, however, who calls out to her supporters,
Tonight, turn your weapons to the Capitol! Turn your weapons to Snow!

The trailer got a huge response both times that it was shown during the Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 panel, and I will happily admit that I was pretty blown away myself. This franchise has been incredibly successful in the last few years, and it looks like this final sequel will bring it to a conclusion that ends things in epic fashion. Needless to say, we’re very excited for November 20th.
