The 5 Best Super Bowl Movie Trailers, According To Fans

Patriots, schmatriots! We all know that the real winners last night were the summer blockbusters that dared to show footage from their anticipated films. (OK, Katy Perry’s dancing sharks were pretty incredible, as well, but not as amazing as Vin Diesel’s Furious 7 stunts.) We debated fastly and furiously around the CinemaBlend offices about which movie trailer made the biggest splash. But several favored the dinosaurs of Jurassic World and others were enamored with the animated Minions.

So we turned to Hulu, who collected votes on the top Super Bowl advertisements from Sunday night’s game via the Toyota AdZone. And they took that data and divided it up by category. When they applied their totals to the top five movie trailers, as selected by audience members, they went in this order. Do you agree? Did you like one more than another? Weigh in with your comments below!

5. Pitch Perfect 2

The Barden Bellas surprised audiences last night with an NFL cameo… though they weren’t the only movie to pull off that stunt. Green Bay Packer Clay Matthews showed up as the leader of a macho, manly a capella group, and stole a little thunder away from Revel Wilson and Anna Kendrick. The other spot that used an NFL star, the Ted 2 spot with Tom Brady, didn’t make Hulu’s list.

4. Tomorrowland

I would have labeled this one a bit of a disappointment, mainly because I didn’t think it showed us a whole hell of a lot. That’s likely by design, as Brad Bird and (especially) writer Damon Lindelof are taking a lot of pride in protecting the secrets of Tomorrowland. If you pause and scan through, you get good looks at the futuristic realm at the heart of this story. But outside of the presence of George Clooney, I’m still not seeing a ton of reasons to buy into Tomorrowland.

3. Terminator Genisys

"Their making another one of these?" That was the loudest sentiment expressed by the non-movie-junkies at our Super Bowl party when Paramount unveiled its Genisys clip. "And with Arnold?!" was the natural follow up. The flipping school bus won over the majority of Hulu’s fans, I’m sure, as did the presence of the once-and-future T-800. Having Arnold utter his iconic line, "I’ll be back" probably sold a few million tickets to Terminator fans who want to remember the good old days.

2. Jurassic World

Out of most of the movie trailers shown, Jurassic World had the most new footage (outside of the movie that takes the top slot on this list). In addition, it was the specific things shown in the Jurassic World trailer that likely has it at No. 2 on this list. Any time you can feature Chris Pratt racing into battle with an genetically-engineered dinosaur WITH a pack of Velociraptors on his team, you just know that audiences are in for something special!

1. Furious 7

This one HAD to be the big winner on Super Bowl Sunday. How many other trailers attempted to physically drop jaws with their footage? The clip or James Wan’s Furious 7 knocked us out with scene-after-scene of pure action spectacle… from The Rock firing off a massive machine gun in battle to – of course – Vin Diesel jumping sports cars between skyscrapers. This was the commercial to beat at the Super Bowl, and like the Seahawks, all other competitors ended up in second place!
