Hollywood has struggled for years to turn the life of legendary rocker Jimi Hendrix into a biopic, to no avail. Every effort to get this done has, so far, crashed and burned. Here’s the latest attempt, and it’s something that’s been tried before. Outkast is doing it.

You remember Outkast, they were kind of a big deal back in the early 2000s when every awkward white guy in the world suddenly thought he could dance to “Hey Ya!”. They’ve been trying to make a Hendrix biopic for awhile, with lead singer Andre 3000 set to star, but like every Hendrix biopic nothing has ever come of it. But they’re still at it and now there’s some movement which suggests they’re pushing forward with their plans again.

Hayley Atwell, who we’re set to see a lot of in Captain America: The First Avenger this summer, spoke to Esquire and said after Cap she’s teaming up with the boys of Oukast. Here’s how she explains it:
Next up is possibly a Jimi Hendrix biopic — an independent film with Andre 3000 from OutKast playing Jimi Hendrix. But I don't know, really. The Atwell team is like, Let's just wait and see... I love how I call them Team Atwell because each of them works with fifty other people as well. Sometimes they forget who I am. I was on the phone with a member of Team Atwell once, and we chatted for like half an hour and he said, "I really loved you in that film." And I said, "I wasn't in that film." Team Atwell doesn't even know who Hayley Atwell is.
So they’re talking about it, and the Hendrix biopic is still alive, but maybe not going anywhere very fast. I suspect this attempt may end up back in development hell with all the others, but if it doesn’t, Andre 3000 does seem sort of perfect to play Hendrix. This could work.
