Bill Murray showed up on the Satellite broadcast Howard Stern show this morning and, because Howard is kind of a geek, he got asked about Ghostbusters 3. Bad news ghostbusting fans, he still doesn’t seem the least bit interested in doing this movie.
Yesterday here Reitman told everyone Bill Murray had a Ghostbusters 3 script to read, and during the interview Bill confirmed that he has it… somewhere. He hasn’t read it and didn’t sound inclined to read it any time soon. He know he’s the road block. Says Murray:
Yeah, I guess I’m the problem. Before I was an asset, [but] now I’m a problem. There’s a script somewhere [on my desk], but I haven’t read it yet.
When Stern asked him if he hasn’t read it because he thinks it’s “a bullshit idea”, Murray responded this way:
There’s a little bit of that. I only made one sequel and it was Ghostbusters 2 and it didn’t end up the way it was presented.
It sounds like the only reason Murray hasn’t completely rejected the idea is out of some loyalty to Ivan Reitman. He says, “I owe him, ya know. He’s puzzled that I haven’t gotten to this one.”
So he’s not saying no, even though he doesn’t really seem like he wants to do it. He’ll get to that script, eventually… probably. Bill sums up his guilt over the thing this way:
Well, I’ll get to it… I gotta get to it – I feel bad. I got a message and I think people – I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings – it’s not the foremost thing in my mind, so I don’t think about it. You know, the studio gets excited every 10 years or so. What they’d really like to do is recreate the franchise. I remember when the new Ghostbusters was going to be Chris Rock, Chris Farley and Chris Crane… Kris Kringle… someone [laughs] – that had it together.

He really doesn’t want to do this movie, and if he does it, it’ll only be done begrudgingly, out of some sense of guilt. Even if he’s in it, since he’s not into it, Murray’s probably not going to be very good. Maybe they’d be better off without him. Scratch that. Maybe they’d be better off not doing it. Do another sex movie with Ashton Kutcher, Ivan Reitman, Bill Murray’s just not interested.
