It was just two months ago that Brett Ratner was talking big about his plans for the Conan the Barbarian reboot, saying it wouldn't be a remake and he would have a cool take on the original material. But now if Conan producer Joe Gatta is to believed, Ratner is now completely off the project-- and the search is on for a new director.

In an interview with Empire Online, Gatta said, "We’re currently in the process of hiring a director. For the past six months we were discussing the movie with Brett Ratner, and for more timing issues than anything else we had to part ways with Brett. We all wanted him to do it, believe me; just the timing didn’t work. But you never know what can happen."

So what does this mean for the Conan fans who feared what Ratner would do their cherished memories of the character? Who knows? Maybe they'll find someone better than Ratner to make it, but then again, they could just as easily find someone worse. Ratner's departure might also turn this into a much less high-profile project than it would have been with his name attached, which hey, might mean you never have to see it at all!
