It would seem that Andy Garcia's loss is David Duchovny's gain. Variety reports that The Godfather: Part III actor has been replaced by the X-Files star in Phantom, a submarine thriller from writer director Todd Robinson.

Set to go into production next month in Long Beach, California, the movie also stars Ed Harris, William Fichtner and Natascha McElhone. The movie is a period piece set during the Cold War. Duchovny will play the Captain of a Soviet submarine that is on a mission "cloaked in mystery." Robinson's previous credits include the 2006 thriller Lonely Hearts with John Travolta and James Gandolfini. The film is being co-financed by RCR Media Group and will be distributed by Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisition Group.

Duchovny recently completed production on the fifth season of his hit Showtime show Californication and recently worked on the comedy Goats with Ty Burrell and Vera Farmiga. The actor is also attached to star in Relative Insanity - a modern adaptation of Anton Chekhov's The Seagull - starring Maggie Grace, John Slattery, and Helen Hunt. Duchovny's last film, The Joneses, was given a limited release in 2010.

I've never understood why David Duchovny doesn't do more films. While the actor has always made a home for himself on television, he does have some solid movies on his resume including the serial killer drama Kalifornia with Brad Pitt and Juliette Lewis, and the Susanne Bier drama Things We Lost In The Fire with Halle Berry and Benicio del Toro. Now that Californiacation is back on hiatus, hopefully he uses the time to get back on the silver screen.
