Dune Re-Doomed

Frank Herbert’s series of “Dune” novels ranks right up there on my list of the best Science Fiction. On the other side of that coin is David Lynch’s adaptation of Herbert’s classic, which ranks right down there with Masters of the Universe as one of the worst Sci-Fi movies ever projected at a drive in.

David Lynch apologists are quick to blame the movie’s crappiness on unsanctioned studio cuts and outside interference. Suck it up. The movie stinks. There’s not a single scene in it that doesn’t. Filled with excessive voiceovers and banal narration, the thing is a giant rubber worm beating, there’s no excusing it.

But, fans of the film don’t want to hear any of that (In fact I once had a review of it rejected by an editor simply because he refused to publish something negative. He thinks it’s a classic, I think it’s a classic turd.) Lynch is dead fire set on proving the movie’s worth, and so after years of claiming he’ll have no further involvement with the film, he’s jumped on board Universal’s impending Extended Edition DVD release of the movie.

According to Digital Bits, the release will include the original theatrical release of the film as well as an officially Lynch sanctioned director’s cut of the movie. The time for apologist excuses is over, now we’ll get to see Lynch’s final version suck as well.
