For the life of me I've never been able to figure out why Tom Hanks hasn't pursued a larger directing career. While the guy has only one feature credit to his name, 1996's That Thing You Do, it was a fantastic debut that everyone thought would lead to much more. Then I watch the trailer for Hanks' newest directorial effort, Larry Crowne, and I realize that even if he's going to continue directing, he really needs to stay in front of the camera as well. The man is just too likable.

Yahoo! has premiered the first trailer for the new film which stars Hanks, Julia Roberts, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Bryan Cranston, and Cedric The Entertainer. In the film, the veteran character plays the titular Larry Crowne, a middle-aged man who gets fired from his job and decides to pursue higher education.

While it may just be that I woke up in a good mood today, I couldn't stop smiling while watching this trailer. The movie looks like it will have charm to spare and while Tom Hanks seems to just be playing himself, I can't really hold that against him. Even more impressive is that it seems a tad generic, but I still find myself enjoying it. Let us know what you think in the comments section.

To go with the trailer, Universal has also sent over six brand new images from the film, which you can see in the gallery below. For more on Larry Crowne, be sure to head over to our Blend Film Database
