When it comes to movies about demon possession, the Catholics pretty much have the market cornered. The movies always involve some creature from hell finding its way to Earth only to come face to face with a priest who wants to banish it back to where it came from. Now, however, thanks to producer Sam Raimi and director Ole Bornedal, Jewish folks now have a possession movie of their very own.

The first trailer for The Possession, starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Kyra Sedgewick, Madison Davenport, and Natasha Calis, has arrived online. Check it out below, courtesy of Yahoo!

The movie, written by Stiles White and Juliet Snowden, is about a young girl who, while staying with her divorced father, discovers an olden wooden box at a yard sale. Unfortunately, what she doesn't know is that the box contains a force known as a dybbuk, a malevolent spirit that is the lost soul of a dead person. When the young girl opens the box and becomes possessed, her father and mother must reconcile their differences in order to help her. While the film was originally rated R by the MPAA, it has since been edited down to have a PG-13 rating for "mature thematic material involving violence and disturbing sequences." The Possession hits theaters on August 31st and you can read more about it in our Blend Film Database.
