I’ll be honest, when I first heard of plans to do a cinematic reboot of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, I wrote it off. I figured this would be one of those projects that languished in development hell and never got off the ground. There goes that idea. Over the last several months, the film cast all the major roles, and most recently revealed Elizabeth Banks' look as Rita Repulsa. Now, we have our first look at what the Power Rangers themselves will actually look like. Here we go.
Somehow, they’ve done an amazing job of making the Power Rangers look exactly like they used, and nothing at all like like they used to, at the same time. They are full body suits with helmets and visors. They are mixtures of grey (the original outfits used white) and whichever color is associated with each ranger. They have their medallions at their waist like belt buckles. As far as that goes, they’re pretty much what you’d expect.
However, at the same time, they look much more like armor than the original body suits did. This makes them look like versions of Iron Man that Tony Stark might have come up with if he wanted some more colorful options. This is, in large part, due to how each of the Power Ranger’s chest pieces appears to be lit up. It’s difficult to tell if they do, or if that’s simply a reflection, but it certainly gives the impression of an Arc Reactor.
Entertainment Weekly, who unveiled the image, also has a bit more information about the suits themselves. Production designer Andrew Menzies says that they are an alien costume that grows on them and is not man made. That essentially was supposed to be what the original costumes were as well, it was just difficult to show that off with a Japanese television budget.
The radical departure from the original costumes will surely turn off many fans of the original series. At the same time, it’s difficult to imagine what sort of design would make everybody happy. In the grand scheme of things, it’s not the radical departure that we saw with the unveiling of Rita Repulsa’s costume.
