Hobo With A Shotgun Trailer: Is Rutger Hauer The Next Machete?

If Machete is a big success this weekend, don’t be surprised to see a whole new wave of exploitation films unleashed on American cinemas. But even if it isn’t, we know we’re getting at least one more grindhouse movie: Hobo with a Shotgun.

While making Grindhouse, the movie which first played host to Machete’s fake trailer, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino held an online contest for aspiring filmmakers, to see who could come up with the best, grindhouse style movie trailer. The winner was a trailer by Jason Eisner’s Hobo with a Shotgun and while unlike Machete that fake trailer never actually appeared on screen, they’re turning it into a movie too.

The first official trailer for Hobo with a Shotgun has arrived online. According to the movie’s official site it’ll actually be shown in front of some Machete prints in Canada. But if you’re not in Canada, here it is right now:

Yep, that was Rutger Hauer you just saw as the titular shotgun wielding hobo. If you went into that trailer expecting something in the mold of Machete’s gritty style, you were probably a bit surprised. Actually it seems as though Eisner has gone an entirely different direction from the Hobo with a Shotgun movie he teased in the original, fake trailer he made for the movie. Here’s the old one. Take a look:

I have to say, I like the old, fake trailer a lot better than the real one. It’s as though Rutger Hauer got involved and they decided to take this thing seriously and suck all the fun out of it. Maybe I’m wrong. I’d like to be. I’m still rooting for this movie.

No word yet when or if Hobo with a Shotgun will get a theatrical release, but we’ll let you know when we know.
