Hot Tub Time Machine 2 Confirmed To Release In 2014

Grab yourself a hot glass of Chernobly and let’s toast! Hot Tub Time Machine 2 will arrive in 2014. It doesn’t look like there’s an actual release date set yet, but there is confirmation from MGM and Paramount that the follow-up to the 2010 time-travel comedy will touch down at some point this year. We also have some details about the plot of the sequel, which will center around Rob Corddry’s character Lou this time around.

As of October, it was looking like the sequel to Hot Tub Time Machine would be arriving a bit ahead of schedule, possibly as soon as March 2014. The latest update on the project comes from EW, and confirms that MGM and Paramount say Hot Tub Time Machine will arrive sometime in 2014. No specific month was mentioned. Paramount will distribute in the U.S. and MGM will distribute internationally. As for the official plot of the film:

"When Lou (Corddry) finds himself in trouble, Nick (Craig Robinson) and Jacob (Clark Duke) fire up the hot tub time machine in an attempt to get back to the past. But they inadvertently land in the future. Now they have to alter the future in order to save the past… which is really the present."

Um… what?

In the words of Community’s Dean Pelton…

"Would that this hoodie were a time hoodie!"

Back on topic, as we knew already, John Cusack won’t be returning for Hot Tub Time Machine 2. Instead, we get Adam Scott, who replaces Cusack — as EW puts it — "if not in character than at least in stature." From what we’ve heard, Scott will play the older son to Cusack’s character from the first movie.

The first Hot Tub Time Machine movie centered on a group of guys setting off for a ski trip and ending up getting sent back through time to the 80s and into the bodies of their younger selves — except for Clark Duke, who wasn’t conceived yet. Their attempts to retrace their exact steps the second time around fail, complicating their situation as they try to figure out how to get back to the future. Hilarity and a lot of 80s jokes ensue.

Time travel will probably always be a popular device for story-telling. Just yesterday, we shared the trailer for Welcome to Yesterday a found-footage time travel thriller about a bunch of teens who make a mess of the present when they start tampering with the past. It gave me a major Chronicle flashback. We can only hope that whatever shenanigans the Hot Tub Time Machine crew gets up to in the future is as fixable (or improvable) as it was in the first film, and as funny. We’ll be sure to update you once there’s an official release date.

Update: Sorry, no date yet, but Box Office Mojo has updated that the film will be Rated R for "crude sexual content and language throughout, graphic nudity, drug use and some violence."
