New Hunger Games Clip Has President Snow Advising Seneca Crane

As the release of The Hunger Games approaches, we’re getting more and more looks at the film adaptation of Suzanne Collins' novel. Just the other day, we shared a clip of Peeta being interviewed by Caesar. The most recent clip reveals two other characters as they have a more private conversation.

The Hunger Games tells the story of a girl living in the futuristic nation of Panem, where kids are selected by a lottery each year, and forced to participate in a fight-to-the-death game for the entertainment of the Capitol. With a system like this, it's fair to wonder why this "game" exists and what purpose it serves the government that implements it. The clip below, courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter, touches on that. It features President Snow (Donald Sutherland) and Seneca Crane (West Bentley) as they talk about the games, and more specifically, the subject of hope and the power it holds.

"Hope, it is the only thing stronger than fear. A little hope is effective, a lot of hope is dangerous. Spark is fine, as long as it's contained."

It’s a telling scene, particularly regarding the mindset and philosophy of President Snow as he advises, or rather orders Seneca Crane to “Contain it.”

A scene like this is a fine example of how the film could actually improve on the book, or enhance the story. As the novel is told from Katniss’ perspective, the novel wouldn’t give us the opportunity to sit in on a conversation between Snow and Crane unless Katniss were present. The movie isn’t bound to that, which opens up a world of possibilities.

The Hunger Games arrives in theaters on March 23. More information, photos and videos can be found in our Blend Film Database.
