Not many people know that James Franco, otherwise known as “that guy who phoned it in at the Oscars”, has a little brother, Dave, who is also an actor. The 25-year-old actor has appeared in Superbad and Greenberg and recently wrapped up work on the Colin Farrell vehicle Fright Night, a remake of a classic 80s horror comedy.

According to Deadline, Dave Franco has signed on to play the villain in the upcoming 21 Jump Street adaptation being ushered to the screen by funny man Jonah Hill. Franco plays a drug dealer who is also the most popular kid in high school, and the target of undercover NARC agents Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum. We haven’t really had the chance to see Franco shine as an actor yet, but judging by the pedigree, we can expect him to do some great things with the role.

The problem the production will inevitably run into is making these actors look like they should be in high school. Jonah Hill perpetually looks like a giant baby so he’ll fit right in after a clean shave, but Tatum looks aged at 30 and Franco has that chiseled model look more reminiscent of someone his actual age. Making these guys pass as 18-year-olds will be a challenge.

Also resurrected in the Deadline article is the notion that Johnny Depp, star of the original 21 Jump Street TV series, will appear in a cameo role. The news on this has been back and forth since the film was announced, but Depp has said a several times that he’d be more than happy to appear in the film, presumably as the same character he played in the 80s but in more of a mentor type role.

21 Jump Street is nearing production at Sony so expect sore news on this very soon.
