When Woody Allen stopped starring in his own films about a decade ago, he consistently cast actors who were basically Woody stand-ins-- Larry David in Whatever Works, Will Farell in Melinda & Melinda, etc. It's unclear if his next untitled film, shooting this summer, will also feature a surrogate character, but the fact that he's cast Jesse Eisenberg-- a 21st-century Woody Allen in his mannerisms and even his voice-- could be a huge clue. According to Variety Eisenberg is just one of many actors who have been confirmed to star in the film; joining him will be Ellen Page, Penelope Cruz and Alec Baldwin.

Cruz and Baldwin have been confirmed for the cast for a while, but Eisenberg and Page are new additions, and join the likes of Scarlett Johansson, Evan Rachel Wood and Rebecca Hall as up-and-coming actors working with Allen. Baldwin and Cruz are both Allen veterans-- Baldwin was in 1990's Alice, while Cruz of course won an Oscar for her role in Vicky Cristina Barcelona. As usual Allen will be directing his own screenplay, with plot details kept completely under wraps, though you have to imagine there's a fairly complicated plot involved to get all these actors in the same story. His next film Midnight in Paris will open the Cannes Film Festival next month.
