Eminem's 8 Mile has kind of become the modern standard bearer for a pop star's self-glorifying biopic-- 50 Cent's Get Rich or Die Tryin' was certainly cut from the same cloth-- but should Justin Bieber really be the next one to try the formula? The tween sensation apparently told Teen Vogue back in April that he was working on a biopic about his life, and now gossip site Hollywood Life says a script is close to completion, and just as Bieber promised, it's "kinda like my own version of 8 Mile."

There are endless jokes to be made here about the comparison, or lack thereof, between Eminem's gritty upbringing in blighted detroit and Bieber's childhood in Stratford, Ontario. I guess Bieber has the "raised by a single mom" thing going for him, and being the first bona fide pop star to be discovered on YouTube is a unique hook, but biopics generally rely on this thing called conflict… and I'm just not seeing it here.

Of course, a total puff piece about Bieber and his smile and how he gets his hair so shiny would make millions, but at that point why not just make it a Behind the Music-style documentary and save money on a film crew? Far be it from me to underestimate the power of Bieber, but I have trouble seeing how this one wouldn't get laughed out of a theater by all but the most devoted Bieberites.
