The Bourne franchise was right on the cusp of replacing James Bond as Hollywood’s spy franchise of record until Casino Royale arrived, stole its ideas, and re-invigorated 007. Now with the third Bourne movie, The Bourne Ultimatum, coming out this summer Matt Damon says he’s done playing the character.

The depressing news comes from the Daily Telegraph, which caught up to the man without a memory at Cannes. Damon told them, “The Bourne thing I'm definitely done with.” However he added that the character may continue on with someone else in the role.

I have a tough time picturing anyone but Matt Damon playing the character, but changing leading men is how Bond has survived so long, so why not Bourne? For now though, I plan to enjoy the heck out of the third Bourne installment when it hits theaters this August. It may be the last.
