Disney is remaking 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and they’ve hire the guy currently responsible for making Terminator Salvation happen to direct it. Variety says McG is helming 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo for them.

First, I’m not sure why this movie needs the "Captain Nemo" subtitle, unless Disney is hoping people will confuse the movie with Finding Nemo. Or maybe they’ve had success with excessively long titles on the Pirates franchise so now they think they have to inflate the word count on all of their movies. If that’s what they’re after, maybe they should have gone with 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea with Captain Nemo, that at least would make sense. Using "Captain Nemo" as a subtitle implies that there will be a sequel later on without Captain Nemo, which wouldn’t make sense since he is the means by which one gets under the sea on the first place.

Hiring hacky McG and giving this thing a weird title doesn’t exactly have this off on the right foot. Giving even more cause for concern is the fact that Disney seems to be in sort of a rush. They’re fast tracking it, they want to have the thing made this year.

The original is a classic, an icon even. The thing is, it’s memorable because of the cheesy, rubber, giant octopus special effects and there’s really no way to duplicate that now. You just know they’re going to totally CGI this thing up, and giant CGI octopuses have already been done by Disney in the Pirates franchise. I wonder if they’ll use the same one? Call it a cameo. I fear another Day the Earth Stood Still remake debacle.
