Marvel comics are filled with some terrific female superhero characters, including Captain Marvel (a.k.a. Ms. Marvel), She-Hulk, Black Widow, and many more, but as of yet Marvel Studios has yet to give any of them their own solo adventure within the cinematic universe. That tide may soon be turning, however. Marvel Studios producer Louis D'Esposito recently talked about the potential of a female-driven superhero movie in the near future, just last night came the rumor that the studio is developing a series based around Hayley Atwell's Agent Peggy Carter, and now Thor: The Dark World star Natalie Portman has confirmed that there is definitely some more girl power in the works over at the comic book company.
In a recent interview with the UK site Sci-Fi Now, the actress not only revealed her own passion to see a female-led superhero movie, but also that she's heard plans of a project that could start putting pieces together in the near future. "There are definitely many strong women, but it will be exciting when there is a central female character which I think is coming – I have heard is coming," she said. "And, of course, also a central non-white character will also be exciting. Title characters."
But while Marvel Studios has not yet made a movie about a XX-chromasomed hero, Portman went on to defend their usage of female characters in strong supporting roles. Presumably referencing her own character, Jane Foster, as well as Captain America's Peggy Carter, Iron Man's Pepper Potts and Thor's Lady Sif, the actress said of Marvel movies, "They do definitely have strong female characters in them, and I think it’s a testament to the people who run Marvel - their respect, their just normal human respect for women, the way they want to characterize them. You can tell when men talk to you, as just a person or as a 'woman.'"
Sticking with the theme, the site also asked Portman about the early stages of Thor: The Dark World when Monster director Patty Jenkins was attached to helm. A few months after signing on, however, she ended up leaving the project, which reportedly left Portman upset. In the new interview the actress confirmed that she wasn't happy when Jenkins left, but that it all worked out for the best anyway. “I was very upset because Patty is a wonderful woman," she said. "I was excited to work with her, but I understood why she chose to leave and Alan [Taylor] is really wonderful, so it was bittersweet."
