With the news about Marc Webb's Spider-Man reboot heating up these past few weeks (Emma Stone is Gwen Stacy, Rhys Ifans is Dr. Curt Connors/The Lizard), it only makes sense that we would hear about Sam Raimi's next adventure, Oz The Great And Powerful, which is expected to star Robert Downey Jr. Now, thanks to Pajiba's inside source, new details have emerged about the project.
Fair warning: this post may contain some spoilers regarding the film, so be wary about reading what follows.
According to the site, the film begins when the Wizard, posing as a magician, flies into Oz via hot air balloon (which, he apparently stole while running away from the husband a woman he's been sleeping with). After landing in the merry ol' land, he quickly begins a relationship with the Good Witch Glinda and they decide to team up to defeat the evil witches Evanora and Theodora. The catch is that Theodora isn't actually evil to start with, but after being jilted by Oz, Evanora, who is indeed quite evil, convinces her to help rule all of Oz. Some of the costumes are described as well, with Oz wearing a "velveteen frock coat" and the two evil witches being "incredibly attractive, seductive women," Theodora liking "to wear black, thigh-high boots."
So it would seem that what we will be getting is Robert Downey Jr. playing the whip-smart, womanizing Tony Stark in the world of Oz. That sounds awesome. I've never been a big fan of The Wizard of Oz (it may have something to do with my sister forcing me to watch it 20,000 times when I was a child), but this sounds too good to miss. Add Sam Raimi behind the camera and you have something fantastic brewing.
