Warner Bros is hard at work building the DC Cinematic Universe with films like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad. However, superheroes won’t be their only foray into the world of comic books. It’s been announced that the studio now has plans to adapt the popular Image Comics graphic novel The Infinite Horizon after obtaining a spec script that has been written by Ryan Condal.
Variety reports that the Infinite Horizon movie will be produced by Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Lawrence Grey. Condal, who wrote 2014’s Hercules, will also executive produce. The Infinite Horizon, which is inspired by Homer’s The Odyssey, follows The Soldier With No Name who survived a war only to be stranded halfway across the world at its conclusion. Among the many dangers he faces trying to get home are "escaping shipwrecks, beating a vicious opponent wearing cycloptic combat armor, and resisting the siren's call of a predatory society." The six-issue series, penned by Gerry Dugan and illustrated by Phil Noto, ran from 2007-2011 due to several delays and was nominated for an Eisner Award.
Infinite Horizon isn’t the only Odyssey project that moviegoers can look forward to in the coming years. Funny enough, Warner Bros is concurrently working on a more direct adaptation of the epic poem, which is being helmed by Russian director Fedor Bondarchuk. Lionsgate is also working on their own Odyssey film, which will be directed by The Hunger Games: Mockingjay’s Francis Lawrence and written by Peter Craig. Odysseus’ adventure across of getting home after the Trojan War ended has proved to be a popular story for filmmakers to put their own spin on, like in 2000’s O Brother, Where Art Thou? The Infinite Horizon should provide a unique take on the classic tale by having the protagonist try to get home in post-war Syria and encounter figures from the original story refigured for the modern setting.
Berlanti has left his mark on the comic book world recently as the executive producer of the CW shows Arrow and The Flash, and will also be helming the Arrow/The Flash spinoff (rumored to be titled Legends of Tomorrow) and CBS’s Supergirl. Berlanti’s credits also include the TV shows Everwood and Brothers and Sisters, as well as films like Green Lantern and the upcoming Pan. Aside from Hercules, Condal is also a writer on the upcoming series Colony, on which he is working with Lost Executive Producer Carlton Cuse.
No release date, director or cast announcements have been made yet for Infinite Horizon, but we will keep you apprised on any major developments regarding the project.
