Back in July it was announced that Universal had hired Louis Morneau to direct the Untitled Werewolf Thriller that was reworked from the planned sequel to 2010's The Wolf Man. As I noted in my write-up, Morneau isn't generally known for making movies that are released in theaters, rather spending most of his career making direct-to-DVD titles like Joy Ride 2: Dead Ahead and The Hitcher II : I’ve Been Waiting. Hence why the newest report about the project isn't all that surprising.
Universal has sent out a press release about the new movie - which still doesn't have an official title - announcing the start of production, and has revealed that the film won't be making its way to theaters and, instead, will be making its debut on home video. The news also includes a full cast list, which includes names like Stephen Rea (V for Vendetta, The Crying Game), Steven Bauer (Scarface, Primal Fear), Ed Quinn (True Blood, Eureka), Nia Peeples (Pretty Little Liars, Walker Texas, Ranger), Guy Wilson (Almost Kings, Little Black Book), Adam Croasdell (Supernatural, East Enders) and Rachel DiPillo (Law & Order, The Gates). The screenplay, written by Michael Tabb, Louis Morneau and Catherine Cyran, centers on a group of bounty hunters sent in to take down a supernatural beast unlike anything they have ever seen. The film will be released before Halloween next year.
Before you write this project off completely, I just have one thing to point out: Michael Dougherty's Trick 'r Treat ended up being a direct-to-DVD release movie and in addition to being one of the best horror anthologies of all time, it's one of my favorite Halloween movies (I've actually turned it into a tradition to watch it every year around this time). Hopefully the Untitled Werewolf Thriller can do the same.
