Production Starts On New Toby Keith Flick

Country singer (and unabashed jingoist) Toby Keith has started production on Beer For My Horses, a new film based on one of Keith’s hit songs. In a move suited to the self-styled Americana auteur, Keith co-writes, co-produces, and co-stars in the film (I should coco!), which follows the antics of two small town deputies on a trip to save their girlfriends from evil drug lords, comically evil drug lords says Variety.

Beer For My Horses will be directed by Michael Saloman and, besides Keith, will star Rodney Carrington, Willie Nelson, Claire Forlani, Barry Corbin, and (wait for it)…Ted Nugent! Though no word yet on who the Nuge will be playing, I hope it’s a) a guitar singling madman from an industrial city b) a crazy redneck with a gun collection or c) all of the above.

The real news here isn’t that Keith is making a film – he’s hardly the first country star to try his hand at movies. No, the real news is that Beer For My Horses is Keith’s second cinematic outing. His first film, 2006 drama Broken Bridges, was bankrolled by CMT movies and sister company MTV Films and released shortly in theaters through Paramount Vantage before debuting as a TV Premiere on the CMT channel. Wow, you learn some new meaningless you never wanted to know every day.
