After the latest round of obviously faked Dark Knight rumors, it’s hard to take anything a British newspaper has to say about the casting of big Hollywood celebrities, but The Sun claims to have the inside scoop on what’s up with Russell Crowe.

They say Crowe may not be playing the Sheriff of Nottingham in Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood movie. Word is Nottingham has been delayed while Ridley Scott looks for greener leaves (literally). Instead, Russell may be playing Dr. Watson in Guy Ritchie’s upcoming Sherlock Holmes movie. The Sun claims Ritchie wants him and he wants in, they've only to bring in the lawyers.

This is the Holmes film with Robert Downey Jr. in the lead as the world’s greatest observational detective. I can’t think of anyone less like the classic, detective sidekick character Watson than Russell Crowe, but in this case that may be a plus for Ritchie.

RDJ has already said this won’t be a traditional take on the Holmes mythology, in fact they’re describing this as a “souped up” take on Sherlock Holmes. This Holmes will apparently do Kung Fu. No that’s not a joke. If Sherlock Holmes is going to be some sort of period specific Neo, then casting rough and tumble Crowe as the normally restrained Watson, certainly fits that mold. I guess watching the world’s greatest detective actually do detective work is boring, unless he can take out the bad guys with a spinning roundhouse.
