Sahara

After bouncing around Paramount’s release schedule for a bit, Sahara, directed by Breck Eisner, will hit theatres March 25, 2005. Sahara is based on Clive Cussler’s 1992 novel about the continuing adventures of Dirk Pitt. Sahara stars Matthew McConaughey, Penelope Cruz, William H. Macy, and former filmhobbit.com member, Creedboat, aka Steve Zahn. Yahoo Movies has an exclusive trailer that I link to at the bottom of this article.

So what’s it about? Yahoo says “Master explorer Dirk Pitt (McConaughey) takes on the adventure of his life when he embarks on a treasure hunt through some of the most dangerous regions of North Africa. Searching for what locals call "The Ship of Death", a long lost Civil War battleship filled with coins, Pitt and his wisecracking sidekick (Zahn) use their wits and clever heroics to help Doctor Eva Rojas (Cruz) who believes the ship may be linked to mysterious deaths in the very same area.” Okay, is it just me or does that sound utterly stupid? But, stupid can be fun and the trailer looks like it has potential.

Sahara might be great, but little doubts are creeping into my head. For starters, it has been pushed back twice. Next, author Clive Cussler has filed a lawsuit saying that the movie made changes without his approval. He’s hoping for a court injunction to keep this movie from hitting theatres. (This is Hollywood code for “I want more money, dammit!”) Many movies have tried to emulate the success of Indiana Jones but how many have succeeded? That’s what I thought.

To judge for yourself, watch the trailer.
