Subscribe To Steven Soderbergh Serving As Second Unit Director On The Hunger Games Updates
Here's something I didn't know: apparently directors Steven Soderbergh and Gary Ross are good friends. Looking through their respective IMDb pages, you can see that Ross got a "Thank You" credit on Che: Part One and Ocean's 12, while Soderbergh served as a producer on Pleasantville. Now, with Ross rushing to complete production on one of the biggest films of next year, The Hunger Games, it seems that he's called in a favor.

The Playlist has discovered a pair of Tweets that suggest that Steven Soderbergh is handling the second unit production for The Hunger Games. Just yesterday, production designer Eddie Mills Tweeted, "Soderbergh in the house this weekend!!! very exciting!" This was followed by a message from Chrys Blackstone, an electrician on the set, who apparently said, "Holy shit! Just found out that Steven Soderbergh is coming to the #hungergames to direct 2nd Unit. I am so excited this is getting good!" (that Tweet has since been taken down, and replaced with a Tweet saying, "Just gained a whole bunch of new real followers.. Must be something im tweeting about hmmmm...."). Set to hit theaters on March 23, 2012, the film stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci, Toby Jones, Willow Shields, and Donald Sutherland.

What's interesting is that this seems to be the first time that Soderbergh will be credited as a second unit director, but my curiosity lies in how he ended up with the gig. Obviously he and the and the director are friends, but why did Ross call on Soderbergh or the job? Is there something specific in the film that Ross wants his friend's eye for? Did Soderbergh approach Ross about playing a role? These are all unanswered questions, but I can't imagine that Soderbergh's contribution will be anything but beneficial towards the final product.
