The safe bet on Peter and Bobby Farrelly’s Three Stooges film was that it wasn’t going to happen. Casting decisions came and went, with high-profile actors like Jim Carrey, Benicio del Toro and Sean Penny attaching their names then walking away. But now the comedy is set in stone, so much so that it now has a release date.

20th Century Fox will release the film on Wednesday, April 4, 2012. The Farrellys have cast Will & Grace co-star Sean Hayes as Larry, MADtv cast member Will Sasso as Curly, and Chris Diamantopoulos as Moe. The brothers ramp up the star power with the additions of Jane Lynch, Jennifer Hudson, Sophia Vergara, Criag Bierko, Stephen Collins and Curb Your Enthusiasm creator and star Larry David.

The release date means The Three Stooges will compete against rival comedies American Reunion from Universal and Steve Harvey's Think Like a Man from Sony, as well as Summit’s The Cold Light of Day with Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver. Paramount additionally plans to release James Cameron’s Titanic back into theaters that weekend with a 3D conversion. Busy times, and stiff competition for the Stooges. In dropping the release date, THR revealed new plot elements. Co-writer Mike Cerrone, a frequent Farrelly collaborator, cooked up a story where the three bumbling heroes try to rescue their childhood home, only to get caught up in a murder mystery and end up with their own reality television program. Timely.
