V/H/S Sequel Lines Up Impressive Roster Of Directors

Put away your tricks: we have a Halloween treat for horror aficionados – particularly if you count yourself a fan of the found-footage anthology V/H/S. It turns out that a sequel is rolling forward, and the roster of participating directors has been revealed.

And it sounds pretty great. THR says that Gareth Evans (The Raid), Eduardo Sanchez (The Blair Witch Project, >i>Lovely Molly), Jason Eisener (Hobo with a Shotgun), Timo Tjahjanto (Macabre), Adam Wingard (You’re Next), and Simon Barrett are planning to direct or co-direct segments for the horror sequel. Location shoots will take place in Maryland, Nova Scotia, Indonesia and Los Angeles … probably wherever the directors a situated.

Surprised by the timing of the announcement, Barrett took to Twitter and posted, “You’ll have to give us the benefit of the doubt, but we wouldn’t be doing V/H/S/2 if we didn’t think we could do something amazing with it.”

Our own Mack Rawden certainly loved the original V/H/S, calling it “profoundly disturbing,” “vicious” and “damn good.” But the movie only pulled in a 52% on Rotten Tomatoes. Still, horror movies regularly spawn sequels. Yet, the initial film has banked only $87,629 to date.

OK, I’ll admit, I’m a little confused by the existence of a V/H/S sequel. Do enough people really want to see another? Don’t get me wrong - while I wasn’t a fan of the first film, I do see the potential of an anthology horror film that gives various directors the chance to contribute to a movie that loosely connects its chilling chapters. But if critics kicked V/H/S around and audiences failed to respond, why keep the name and cling to the tired brand? Why not start over with a brand new idea?
