Independence Day: Resurgence is right around the corner, and 90’s action junkies probably can’t wait to see what Jeff Goldblum and the gang have been up to since the last alien invasion. Earlier this week, a pretty spoiler-y trailer for the film was released, and now the first clip from the blockbuster sequel has surfaced on the internet. It features the return of none other than Brent Spiner’s Dr. Okun, who looks like he’s seen better days.
The clip features the reunion of two old characters: Bill Pullman’s President Whitmore and Dr. Okun. We also get a glimpse of William Fichtner’s General Adams, who opens the clip by entering a room filled with monitors of screaming aliens. These aliens could possibly be prisoners of war from the first invasion 20 years ago, and according to Adams, they’re "getting worse." Okun pokes his head into the room and greets Whitmore who says the doctor is finally "awake." Is it possibly that his psychic takeover by the alien from the first film has left him in a coma until now? Many fans assumed he died from the attack, but it just goes to show that you should never assume.
Whitmore’s daughter (Maika Monroe) is looking at the aliens through the monitors and wonders why they’re screaming. Okun corrects her, stating that "they aren’t screaming. They’re celebrating." Looks like they know that the second invasion wave has finally arrived at Earth. It must be awful to go to a party with those aliens if that’s the sound they make when they’re happy. This implies that Okun’s contact and study of the aliens has made him an expert on their behavior. He might have a bigger role in this movie than the first one if he’s the only one who can understand them.
It looks like this clip comes from earlier in the film, and the characters are unaware of the much larger invasion force about to mess them up. It also seems like the aliens know that it's about to hit the fan and are eagerly awaiting some revenge. Maybe there will be a "prison break" scene where they run amuck in the military base and the characters have to escape?
Independence Day: Resurgence takes place 20 years after the invasion that changed the course of the human race. The people of Earth have reverse engineered the alien technology and applied it to their own. When the aliens return with new weapons and an armada twice the size of the first one, it will be up to Jeff Goldblum’s David and Bill Pullman’s Whitmore to find a way to pull off a second miracle.
Roland Emmerich returns to direct Independence Day: Resurgence. The movie also stars Liam Hemsworth, Judd Hirsch, Sela Ward, Maika Monroe, William Fichtner, Vivica A. Fox and Brent Spiner. The blockbuster will hit theaters shortly on June 24.
