Weekend Box Office: Age of Ultron Doubles Up At Number One, Hot Pursuit Flames Out

There wasn't any new competition to Avengers: Age of Ultron this weekend, giving the comic book blockbuster an easy second weekend at the number one spot.

The Marvel sequel added $77 million, sailing easily past the $300 million mark to land at $312 million. That's an impressive total, but well behind the $373 million the first Avengers flick had earned by the end of its second weekend.

Sofia Vergara and Reese Witherspoon's limp comedy Hot Pursuit failed to impress, banking just $13 million for a distant second place. That's a weak showing against its $35 million budget, making the film an early summer box office bomb.

Ex Machina expanded its release to 2,000 locations, enjoying a boost to $3 million this weekend and a $15 million total. The sci-fi thriller remains one of the best reviewed movies of the year (a solid 90%+ on Rotten Tomatoes), but has yet to catch the eye of mainstream audiences.
