Thor thundered back into theaters this weekend riding high on the big buzz that Marvel has generated for its Avengers franchises over the last year and a half. Banking a $86.1 million first place opening, Thor 2 handily exceeded the $65 million debut of the first Thor film back in 2011. When added to the substantial sum the movie has made world-wide, its total international sales exceed $320 million.
Meanwhile last weekend's top earner Ender's Game took a hard hit, dropping more than 60% and slipping to fifth place. With less than $45 million in domestic ticket sales and only a fraction of that from around the world, the sci-fi flick is hard pressed against its $110 million budget.
Romantic time-travel comedy About Time expanded to 1,200 venues and banked $5.8 million to sneak into the top ten at ninth place. 12 Years A Slave continues to expands its release and its sales, adding $6.6 million to its $17 million total.
Space thriller Gravity has also continued to hold on strong, and this week passed an interesting final frontier related marker. With $231 million in domestic sales it cruised past Star Trek Into Darkness' grand total of $228 million and is on its way to becoming one of the top five grossing movies of the year to date.
