About three months, British actor Ben Hardy found himself on a shortlist of actors who were being considered for the role of Scott Summers a.k.a. Cyclops in Bryan Singer's upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse. That role eventually went to Tye Sheridan, but apparently the production saw something in Hardy, because now they've cast him in another role in the movie.
Variety has the scoop on this brand new casting announcement, but what isn't quite clear at the moment is exactly who Ben Hardy will be playing in the cinematic comic book world. The name of the character is unknown at this moment, but sources have told the trade that "the part is significant to the X-Men universe." This is obviously intriguing, and makes us feel the desire to strap on our speculation helmets!
Knowing that X-Men: Apocalypse has already cast Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Alexandra Shipp as Storm, and Kodi Smit-McPhee as Nightcrawler, it makes sense to guess that Ben Hardy will be playing the younger version of a key mutant character who may or may not have already been introduced in this franchise. With that in mind, and considering other recent events, I wonder if he may not be playing Piotr Nikolaievitch Rasputin a.k.a. Colossus.
Admittedly, Hardy doesn't look a whole lot like Daniel Cudmore, who played Colossus in X2: X-Men United, X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: Days of Future Past, but that probably won't matter very soon. That's because Cudmore recently revealed that his part as the metallic Russian mutant is being recast for the upcoming Deadpool movie. Is it to much of a stretch to believe that Hardy is being set up to play a younger version of character whose older version is still a "Player To Be Named Later"?
Ben Hardy is joining a cast that not only includes all of the names mentioned above, but also James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult and Oscar Isaac (as the film's titular villain). Production is gearing up to start soon - as indicated by the many production photos that have been getting released by Bryan Singer - and filming is expected to last many months into the summer. 20th Century Fox is set to have the movie in theaters on May 27, 2016.
