Julia Roberts will compete against Kristen Stewart. How many of you ever thought you’d read that sentence? But this morning the reports we heard last week have been confirmed and it looks like Roberts is now all but signed to play the wicked queen in Relativity Media’s new take on Snow White called The Brothers Grimm: Snow White.

Julia’s version is being directed by Tarsem Singh, best known for helming visually stunning, fantastical movies in The Cell and The Fall. Singh’s style should be a brilliant fit for a live-action version of the Snow White world, but he’ll have competition. Universal Pictures has a different Snow White project in the works called Snow White and the Huntsman in which Charlize Theron will star as the wicked queen, with Viggo Mortensen as the Huntsman and Kristen Stewart as Snow White. Actually the number of Snow White projects in development doesn’t stop there. Disney has one too called Snow White and the Seven.

Of those three projects Snow White and the Huntsman seems like it’s clearly the furthest along and most likely to be in theaters first. They’re set to release it on December 12, 2012. After everyone sees that one will they want to sit down for yet another Snow White tale a couple of months later? Somehow I doubt it, not even if it has Julia Roberts.

This isn’t Julia’s first time in a live-action fairytale. Back in 1991 she starred as Tinkerbell in Hook, the underrated Steven Spielberg directed take on Peter Pan. She wasn’t bad, underneath that short, choppy haircut but somehow playing the wicked queen seems like more her speed. Still, thanks to her, I’m pretty sure I believe in fairies.
