Ethan Hawke has a co-star for his upcoming sci-fi thriller Vigilandia. Variety reports that the Game of Thrones beauty Lena Headey has landed the lead female role in James DeMonaco’s upcoming feature, which will be produced and distributed by Universal Pictures.

The Vigilandia plot, penned by DeMonaco, is being kept under wraps. Producers at Platinum Dunes and Blumhouse only would clarify that DeMonaco’s budget would be relatively low, more in line with such horror films as James Wan’s recent Insidious (which was fantastic) and the upcoming Sinister, also with Hawke. The latter, a supernatural thriller, casts Hawke as a novelist who figures out how a family once was murdered in his home… which raises serious problems.

Headey, meanwhile, has a couple of major projects on the horizon. In addition to the second season of Thrones, which begins on April 1, she appears as the villain in the upcoming Dredd reboot with Karl Urban. She also has been rumored to return to the 300 franchise for director Noam Murro’s planned prequel/sequel The Battle of Artemisia, which could also lure Eva Green.

Between Dredd, the mysterious Vigilandia, and her role in the defunct Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Headey’s really establishing herself as a powerful female presence in the realm of sci-fi storytelling, which is great. The genre needs another Sigourney Weaver or Linda Hamilton, and if Headey willing to shoulder that load, I can think of few better options.
