Few directors have first features as great as James Bobin. While the filmmaker had experience on television, directing episodes of Da Ali G Show and Flight of the Chonchords his first big screen effort came in the form of The Muppets last year and the result was one of the best movies of the year. He is currently hard at work on the sequel, which he is co-writing with Nick Stoller and is set to star Ricky Gervais and Ty Burrell, but he's saving up projects for the future as well.

The Wrap reports that Bobin has signed a deal to direct Tribyville, a new period musical that's being produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay's Gary Sanchez Productions. Bobin wrote the script himself, but any and all plot details are being kept under wraps. Disney is currently in the midst of acquiring the project, so expect that the content will be suitable for families. Because of Bobin's work on The Muppets 2 (or whatever it ends up being called) it's not clear when he will be getting to work on the new project.

Bobin's work on The Muppets gets overshadowed by the amazing script and just the pure awesomeness of the Muppets themselves, but his direction really was superb in that movie, and, most importantly for Tribyville, his scenes with dance numbers and choreography were tons of fun. It will be great to see what he can come up with in his own original script, and with any luck he'll convince Bret McKenzie to handle the music.
