Don’t Expect A Ton Of Willem Dafoe In Justice League, Here’s Why

Willem Dafoe Justice League Vulko

As time goes by, it becomes clearer that Zack Snyder's Justice League will be an enormous, star-studded affair when it hits theaters in November 2017. Characters from all over the DC universe will debut on the silver screen for the very first time, and some truly stellar actors have been tapped to bring these icons to life. One such role is Aquaman supporting character, Vulko, who will be portrayed by the legendary Willem Dafoe. That being said, don't expect to see too much of Dafoe in Justice League. The actor explained:

Well, Justice League is very particular because it's an ensemble movie and my character is being introduced here in order to be a principal role in Aquaman.

During a recent interview with The Guardian, Willem Dafoe addressed his involvement in Zack Snyder's Justice League and clarified the scope of his role as Vulko. While he will definitely appear in the enormous DC team-up, he won't have a major role because his presence in Justice League is primarily a means of establishing Vulko so he can go on to have a "principal role" in the Aquaman solo film.

This quote generally lines up with everything that we have come to expect from Justice League since the film was announced. The overall ensemble is chock full of supporting characters from each of the movie's principal heroes, which means no one's corner of the DC universe can really receive too much attention. While Aquaman characters like Vulko and Mera (Amber Heard) will receive small scenes to set up their bigger roles in Arthur Curry's solo movie, Justice League will also reportedly feature cameos from characters like Iris West (Kiersey Clemons) and Commissioner Gordon (J.K. Simmons). It's basically the exact opposite of what Marvel did during its Phase 1.

Of course, as excited as we are for such a wide cast of supporting DC characters to appear in Justice League, it does raise some genuine concerns. Films set in the DCEU have this far had a tough time rising above pacing problems and issues with character balance. As a director, Zack Snyder needs to make sure that he's being as economical as possible with each of these characters so that the film feels even throughout. Remember, this is something Batman V Superman and Suicide Squad both suffered from earlier this year.

At the end of the day, despite the fact that Willem Dafoe will not have an enormous role in next year's Justice League, we feel confident that he will steal every scene he takes part in. We will bring you more information concerning Justice League as new details become available to us. The long-awaited DC team-up movie will hit theaters on November 17, 2017.
