One Way The Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 Soundtrack Will Be Different From The Original, According To James Gunn

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 soundtrack

Anyone who has seen James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy can instantly tell you how fundamental the soundtrack is to the story. Classic rock and pop songs, and the way in which those songs connect Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) to his lost home on Earth, completely define the narrative. With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 slated to hit theaters next summer, we can likely expect the sequel's soundtrack to similarly play a major role in the film's story; just don't expect more of the same. James Gunn explained:

The second soundtrack is great. I think it's a more diverse soundtrack. I think the first soundtrack [had] a bunch of songs that maybe you heard but didn't know the name of the song -- you didn't know the name of the singer. In this one, we have some really incredibly famous songs, and then some songs that people have never heard. So, it's a much more diverse soundtrack.

James Gunn recently spoke to Super Interessante and addressed the soundtrack in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy sequel. He seemed particularly excited about the fact that, unlike the soundtrack for the first film, Vol. 2 will use a much more "diverse" track list of songs and artists. Guardians of the Galaxy used a ton of familiar (if somewhat obscure) songs to fill out its soundtrack; by contrast, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will bring in some relatively iconic songs, while also digging deep and bringing in songs that most people likely won't recognize.

This doesn't provide much insight into the actual, finalized list of songs that we will see on the film's soundtrack, but it definitely promises that the sequel will carry on the traditions established by the original. James Gunn's offbeat sensibilities clearly remain alive and well.

We have already seen hints of James Gunn's song selection method throughout Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2's early marketing campaign. With songs like, Jay and the Americans' "Come A Little Bit Closer," and Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain," the sequel has already proven itself unafraid to dig deep into the realm of music history while still retaining a relatively iconic feeling to its sound. I think it's safe to say that we're all in pins and needles to see what other songs make it onto the Awesome Mix Volume 2.
