What Star-Lord's Father Will Look Like In Guardians Of The Galaxy 2

Kurt Russell

There is absolutely no denying the fact that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has become one of the most highly anticipated comic book movies of the next year. The film is riding high off of the success of the 2014 original, and the promise of an even crazier story this time around (coupled with positive early reactions) bodes quite well for the sequel. A number of Vol. 2's story elements remain incredibly mysterious, and it now seems that we have finally received our first good look at Kurt Russell's Ego -- albeit in toy form. Check it out below.

Like father like son, right? While that tweet of Ego is a just a toy, it's also the closest (and best) glimpse at the character that we have seen yet. There's a striking resemblance between Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) and his dad, and it's clear that the bearded Ego is a stark departure from his traditional depiction in the source material. Much like his son, Ego has the appearance of an adventurer who has been to all corners of the galaxy, and there's clear inspiration from classic, swashbuckling sci-fi heroes like Han Solo and Mal Reynolds from Joss Whedon's Firefly.

Although there is a definite physical resemblance between these characters, the description of the toys suggests the possibility that they will clash over how to guard the galaxy properly. It reads:

Roguish and unpredictable, Ego and Star-Lord share many of the same qualities as father and son. But when it comes to defending the galaxy as each sees fit, their approaches unquestionably differ. Imagine sending Ego and Star-Lord into Guardians of the Galaxy action with this 6-inch scale figure 2-pack from the Marvel Legends Series. With the Marvel Legends Series, both kid and adult Marvel fans can start a legendary collection of comic- and movie-based Marvel characters. The Marvel's Ego and Star-Lord figures are highly articulated and feature a movie-inspired design, making them an awesome cosmic addition to the Marvel Legends Series.

How their methods will differ remains to be seen. Star-Lord is already known for taking a relatively unorthodox approach to his heroics, so Ego might not appreciate that when he finally meets his son.

Something tells us that Ego is hiding many secrets and tricks up his sleeve right now. The character has barely appeared in any of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2's marketing material so far, and Kurt Russell's take on the character hasn't shown up in a single trailer. That seems like a notable omission for such a big character and such a prominent actor, so there has to be a reason for it. You don't hide a guy like Kurt Russell unless you have an excellent reason for doing so.

James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will debut in theaters later this year on May 5, 2017.
