Could The Bourne Legacy Sequel With Jeremy Renner Happen? Here's What Justin Lin Says

jeremy renner in the bourne legacy getting a sequel

We last saw Jeremy Renner in the Bourne universe back in 2012, when Universal stepped away from the Jason Bourne storyline to give us a story centered on Aaron Cross, another black ops agent played by Renner. The Bourne Legacy ended up making more than $276 million worldwide on a $125 million budget, a decent amount, albeit the lowest of the five Bourne movies. So, why hasn't there been a Bourne Legacy sequel? Director Jason Lin, who was signed on for the sequel, has finally spoken out.

I talk to Jeremy all the time and, technically, it's still in-development but look ... Jeremy, I'm one of his biggest fans and I think I signed on because we'd been looking for stuff to work together and we still look for stuff to work together. It was just an opportunity at that time.

If you've been keeping tabs on The Bourne Legacy 2, you may already know that a sequel was in development with Universal and as recently as when the latest Bourne movie with Matt Damon was being produced, it was mentioned another Jeremy Renner movie was still in development. Per Lin's comments to IGN at the TCA summer press tour, a sequel to The Bourne Legacy hasn't technically been killed by the studio, but it isn't likely to be going anywhere, either.

This doesn't mean that Justin Lin and Jeremy Renner no longer want to work together. Tony Gilroy actually got to direct Renner in The Bourne Legacy and Lin had been tapped for the sequel, namely because he wanted to work with the actor. But Lin did also say that working on a whole new universe for the big screen is an awfully big task. (He should know, having directed several of the Fast & Furious movies.) The bigger thing he'd like to focus on is getting to work with the actor moving forward.

It was actually getting to be really exciting, but I also realized that's a whole other franchise universe, and so to me my connection to it is through Jeremy and we're finding some really great things to hopefully work together on.

So far, Lin hasn't gotten his wish to work with Jeremy Renner on a future project. Still, the director has some interesting stuff coming up the pipeline, including the Netflix collaboration The Stand Off. He's also supposed to be directing Hot Wheels and Space Jam 2, the latter of which has also been in developmental hell for a while, as well. We'll have to wait and see which projects move forward into development and which don't. Meanwhile, we'll also have to wait and see if Bourne 6 with Matt Damon will ever become a reality, too.

Luckily, you can see what movies are 100% going to hit theaters in the coming months with our full premiere schedule.
